Microsoft’s “New Bing” Leaks with AI Features 💦

Bing is still not as cool of a name as Google, but if the leaked images of the “New Bing” are accurate, we’ll use it anyway.

Over the weekend, screenshots leaked of Microsoft’s apparent long awaited ChatGPT-powered update to Bing.

Owen Yin recapped in this medium.com piece piece what he saw when he visited the search engine.

Here are the screenshots.

Main AI Search Prompt

It looks like Bing will throw a layer of fresh paint on the ChatGPT interface, and add a voice prompt option.

You’ll just ask your question (voice or text) and Bing will answer it. As we’ve reported before, it will use the yet-to-be-released ChatGPT-4, the newest version of OpenAI’s chatbot.

Citations

Presumably to cite its answer and to provide you more resources, Bing’s AI results will link to websites like a traditional search engine would.

Normal Search Is Just a Swipe Away

Really like this interface to swipe up to access AI, and down to access normal search.

Microsoft’s vision for New Bing is that it will be a “research assistant, personal planner and creative partner.”

It gets weirder and wilder from there.

The Chat Thread

This screenshot purports to be a conversation between the user and New Bing about current movies. Total boon for people who have no friends. It’s also worth noting the marriage of ChatGPT and search will give the AI access to up to date information (ChatGPT is currently trained on data through 2021 only).

The limits on what New Bing can do appear not to exist. Per the article:

“You can give it personal requirements, like your meal preferences, budget constraints, location or time requirements and Bing will adapt its response to your needs and interests.”

When will the New Bing launch? 🚀

The ChatGPT-powered search is the worst kept secret in tech, and the “accidental” leaks over the last few days indicate that a release of both the New Bing and ChatGPT-4 is imminent.

There is speculation on Twitter that it could launch as early as February 8… the same day Google is holding its “Google presents” event, in which they’ll focus on how they’re “reimagining” search.

AI Wars™️ indeed.

Google Announces Event To Possibly Unveil Its AI Search 📺

You are looking live at a Google’s landing page for their event on February 8.

And nothing says changing the landscape of tech and humanity forever like a series of middle school clip art images.

Anyway, here’s how the event is being described:

“We're reimagining how people search for, explore and interact with information, making it more natural and intuitive than ever before to find what you need. Join us to learn how we're opening up greater access to information for people everywhere, through Search, Maps and beyond.”

It’s that “beyond” part that titillates.

Many are speculating that this will show off Google’s answer to ChatGPT.

Our take: Could very well be wrong here, but given that Google 1) has preached extreme caution in releasing AI tech and 2) just last week announced a $300 million investment into ChatGPT rival Anthropic, I am dubious that they will unveil an AI on par with the Microsoft-OpenAI joint.

Certainly, they will talk up artificial intelligence and, if this Rembrandt of an image is any indication, expand upon their photo search features. But generative AI? I’m not so sure.

We’ll see. SmokeBot has been known to be wrong before… like that time he posed as R2-D2 and proposed to Queen Amidala on the set of Attack of the Clones. Apparently he wasn’t the droid she was looking for… and security felt the same way.

Headlines 📰

OpenAI CTO Mira Murati agrees with just about everybody that bad actors can use ChatGPT to do damage: He told Fortune that “ChatGPT and the like can be dangerous in the wrong hands” and “used by bad actors”. Will that slow them down in releasing ChatGPT-4? Surely not. And don’t call me Shirley.

AI-powered Seinfeld show on Twitch got canceled: The slightly viral, never-ending, AI-powered Seinfeld stream on Twitch (who had that on their 2023 Bingo card?) which we featured in a send last week got canceled because the AI generated some gnarly fare about the LGBTQ community. We won’t repeat it here, but the clip lives on right here. Twitch has pulled it. So in case you’re wondering, yes, you can cancel AI. For now, at least.

Follow the money to AI: Cryptocurrency’s precipitous fall coincided almost perfectly with the explosion of AI, and major financial firms predictably noticed. “More than half of the institutional traders surveyed by global financial services giant JP Morgan said that artificial intelligence and machine learning will be the most influential technology in shaping the future of trading over the next three years.”

A Colombia judge used ChatGPT to draft a ruling: A judge in Colombia used ChatGPT in the process of drafting a ruling in favor of an autistic child to exclude him from paying fees for medical appointments due to his parents’ limited income. Colombia actually encourages the use of tech to make legal work more efficient, so this is probably not the first time this has happened. It’s just the first time that a judge admitted to doing it. “The judge also included his own insights into applicable legal precedents, and said the AI was used to ‘extend the arguments of the adopted decision.’” Sounds reasonable to SmokeBot.

3 Cool Tools 🛠️

Not just one today, you get a sampler pack.

Cool Tool 1

Love this. Get answers from all those files you have on your computer.

Cool Tool 2

Transcribe audio files into text on your Mac.

Cool Tool 3

Not really usable yet. But Google showed off their text-to-video tech. You can edit any video by simply giving instruction, and the output maintains the scene, exposure, and fidelity of the original.

At least there are no X rated uses for this one. 🙃

Tweet of the Day 🦅

We saw how decentralized free went with crypto. So I’m sure the grifters and monsters won’t come to AI.
